SWAN LAKE - PRODUCTION OF THE TEATRO ALLA SCALA

December 16, 2010

When his Swan Lake came to La Scala in 1990, Nureyev portrayed the pivotal dual role of the sinister and dubious Wolfgang/Rothbart. But the ballet’s true lead is the romantic Prince Siegfried, at once pensive and contemplative, inclined more towards melancholy than heroism. Nureyev choreographed extremely difficult variations for Siegfried, the centre point at the intersection of the plot’s storylines. In a new and exciting collaboration under the musical direction of Daniel Barenboim, Nureyev’s utterly tragic version of Tchaikovsky’s best-loved ballet, introspective and complex in its technical and interpretative demands, returns to La Scala after nearly ten years. At selected performances Alina Somova will dance the twin roles of Odette and Odile and Leonid Sarafanov will be Sigfried.
